November is Diabetes Awareness Month. For women in menopause, there is a lot to understand about diabetes.

Many common symptoms of menopause and also happen if you have diabetes. Both conditions can lead to:

  1. Hot Flashes
  2. Sweating
  3. Frequent urination
  4. Foggy thinking
  5. Irritability
  6. Tiredness

 

Diabetes is the number 6 killer of women ages 45 to 54 and the number 4 killer of women ages 55 to 64. Many women who have diabetes are worried that taking estrogen will cause extra risk if you have diabetes. But the fact is, women who take estrogen are less likely to get diabetes, according the the Women’s Health Initiative study (WHI).

This diabetes song will help you know the symptoms of diabetes so you can talk with your healthcare provider about it. By 2050 it’s estimated that 1 in 3 people will have diabetes. Many people have it now or have a condition called prediabetes where there blood sugar is high, but not quite high enough to be called diabetes. If you find out you have prediabetes, it may be possible for you to make changes that will prevent you from developing diabetes.
