Sharon Osborne Has Double Mastectomy Due To BRCA Gene Mutation

Sharon Osborn, judge on America’s Got Talent, recently had a bilateral mastectomy due to her having a gene known to increase breast cancer  – the BReast CAncer or BRCA gene. The gene is also associated with an increase in ovarian and colon cancer. Many people don’t realize that the BRCA gene is also associated with an increased risk of cancer of the pancreas and even melanoma of the eye.

Men are also at increased risk of breast cancer, colon cancer, pancreatic cancer and prostate cancer.

If you have a strong positive history of any of these cancers, talk with your doctor about screening for the BRCA gene. It’s only a blood test. Not everyone who is positive chooses to have a mastectomy, but you will have the option to be screened with a mammogram and breast MRI, each alternating every 6 months.
