It seems the verdict is nearly unanimous – Menopause Sucks.
Menopause is such a weighted word that many women don’t even want to say it out loud. In fact, I discovered that one of my new patients developed a speech impediment when she entered menopause…
Me: What brings you here today?
Her: I want to discuss MMmmmmeeeennnnooo….
Me: Excuse me?
She repeated it. The word just got stuck in her throat.
Me: Can you please write down what you’re trying to say?
This is what she wrote…
MMmmmmeeeennnnooo….
Me: “What is it about the “M” word that makes it so terrible?”
Her: “Oh, don’t get me started? I know what’s going to happen! My face will get hot, my vagina will get dry, my clothes will get tight, my skin will get wrinkles, my energy… her voice faded out. And then she added, “And there’s nothing I can do about it.”
I’ve heard variations of this story thousands of times.
It’s true the possible symptoms of menopause can suck. But it’s the last thing she said that I take issue with…”And there’s nothing I can do about it.”
That is not true. That’s just stinkin’ thinkin’. And it’s wrong.
There’s a lot you can do about the symptoms of menopause.
Do you really think that knowing what to expect, understanding why it happens and taking steps to stop or minimize or treat the symptoms leaves you hopeless and helpless?
In fact, it’s quite the opposite.
Sure there is the reality of aging. Everyone gets older and that has its challenges.
But imagine creating habits that improve the quality of your life, establishing a lifestyle that lowers the risk of certain chronic illnesses, and choosing treatments that minimize the symptoms or even prevent them before they occur?
It’s all about taking care of the SUM of you and not SOME of you. It’s all about being proactive and not reactive.
And it comes at a time of life when you’ve gained so much wisdom.
Now it’s time to spend that wisdom on you. Time to Nurture the Nurturer.
If you live long enough, you will go into menopause. The only other option is you die first. Not a great alternative, right?
