Since Covid19 has become a household international word and Corona went from being a brand of beer to being a potentially lethal virus, the world has been experiencing a tremendous increase in stress. And since this is Labor Day, it’s worth mentioning that the impact of Covid19 on the workforce is particularly great.
A recent issue of the American Journal of Managed Care reported that the COVID-19 pandemic has not only affected employees, it has also affected employers as well. The article sites that 88% of workers reported experiencing moderate to extreme stress over the past 4 to 6 weeks. And among those who reported stress, 62% were losing at least 1 hour a day in productivity and 32% lost at least 2 hours a day due to COVID-19—related stress. That’s a lot of work lost and a lot of being stressed.
The article also stated that that “from February 16 to March 15, prescriptions filled per week for antidepressant, anti-anxiety, and anti-insomnia medications increased by 21%. Here’s how we know it is definitely associated with Covid19, 78% of all 3 prescriptions filled during the peak week ending March 15 were for new prescriptions.
Covid19 didn’t invent stress, but is sure did increase it.
