HealthRock® Releases Free Download in recognition of Health Literacy Month

Newton, MA. – October is Health Literacy Month and in recognition of that, HealthRock® has created a new song to explain health literacy and increase awareness of this enormous health problem.

According to the Institutes of Medicine, there are 90 million health illiterate adults in the United States. That means that half the adult population does not have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions according to the US Department of Public Health. US children are also greatly affected because parents are their primary role models and the means by which children interface with the medical system. Poor health literacy helps explain why kids whose moms were overweight before conception were by age 7 much more likely to be overweight themselves, according to a study from the journal Pediatrics.

Health Literacy faces steep challenges and limited office visit time, confusing instructions, and gaps between patients’ ability to understand and medical providers’ ability to make explanations simple.

The US Department of Health and Human Services has identified health literacy as an important component of health and communication, medical product safety, and oral health. Studies show that up to 90% of illnesses and disease are preventable, said Mache Seibel, MD, Founder of HealthRock® and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, if we can give patients the information and inspiration they need to stay healthy, happy and productive.

www.healthrock.com is an award winning interactive health education site for children that teaches positive health behavior. Our goal is to use music to make health information more memorable, enjoyable, and actionable, said Dr. Mache who performs HealthRock’s songs as DocRock.

HealthRock’s songs, animations and videos have appeared on national television and radio and have been performed in schools, meetings and events across the country. HealthRock is the recipient of eHealthCare Leadership, iParenting Media, and Parents’ Choice Approved awards.
